Love at first sight?

Magic Lantern (ML) announced today that they have an alpha version of their software for the Canon 5D Mark III.

We are very happy to announce the first public test version for the 5D mark III. Since a complete port may take some time and we realize that a lot of people are waiting for it, we have decided to release early a minimal version that should be useful and - we hope - with very little risk.

When I heard this news, it was expected and forecast for sometime, I felt like I had been done over like a jilted lover. I own a 5D Mark III and I have invested in some serious Canon glass. But I am having second thoughts in investing my hard earned with a company that seemingly sells a product that is nobbled in some form or other. The MkIII isn’t cheap and was long awaited and to their credit the timing was very good - for them. But this announcement must engender a very bitter taste in all MkIII owners and especially so in those that use the video features of the camera.

While it’s great to have a company like ML that works to elicit what is obviously within the camera’s capacity, it is also very sad that Canon didn’t, doesn’t, wont? do the right thing by it’s incumbent customers and release these features. After all, doesn’t a 3rd party hack void the warranty?

It’s a slap in the face is what it is. And given the rising tide of competition of competitively priced FF marvels from Sony, Nikon and the like, I would bet there are a lot of people out there starting to rethink their loyalty to Canon. The adage that says its the glass that is the investment must surely be modified by the inclusion of which brand we’re talking about.

Looks like a job for Superman?

Canon have a moral obligation to take care of its customer base. What Canon should do is update the 5D MkIII firmware to release the features that are evidently there so that owners can begin to feel loved again. It ain’t hard and it is the measure of an organisation who will admit it’s mistakes and rectify them before it’s too late. Or maybe it is already too late.
